Becoming an alien #traveling

"How about China? Have you seen the great wall?"
"All walls are great as the roof doesn't fall" says Bjork in her Selma Songs.

It might be true. So is it still necessary to travel to China and see the great wall? No. Not to see the great wall.

But it is still necessary to travel and meet people.

I learned a lot from traveling like never before.

When you're lecturing people for a living, it's normal to be confident about your intelligence. But somehow you get too carried away. You stop learning. You feel that you're smart enough.
Traveling is the remedy.

You travel. Alone. Not to see the landmarks, but to test on your surviving skills. If you're really that smart, can you really survive? Out there people are different. The culture is different. The language is different, and sometimes English is just not enough. Your 600 TOEFL score is useless. Your 3-point-something GPA is useless. What important is your adapting skills.

Out there. Alone. I was an alien. I was alienated. No one speaks my language, and the locals don't speak any English. I experienced this when I was stranded in Vieng Xai, Laos, a town near Vietnam border crossing. Very little (almost no) tourist infrastructure. And the transport! Oh! Easy to get there, but there was no bus to take me and my new travel mate back to the main town we're staying. No one speak English and my broken Lao phrases I picked up weren't helping. No bus. No taxi. No cyclo. No motorbike taxi. Nothing! Worse: no one want our money. Back home, money can buy you (almost) everything. A 38km ride is one thing that is supposedly easy to buy.

We waited and waited and waited. Hour after hour. After 4 hours we decided to just fuck it and walk the long 38km winding road, up and down the hills, back to Sam Neua, the main town.

We learned to adapt and survive - helping ourselves when no one would like to help us.

We walked walked and walked. I'm not really strong, but I learned to be. The road was almost empty. There were only 2-3 vehicles in every 30 minutes. Finally, a truck came along. And we hitchhike.
We survived.

No, it wasn't because you're damn smart, or Uni grad, or speak 7 languages. Whatever. Sometimes it's just because you let yourself go with the flow. The universe will do the rest, one very important lesson I learned from the laid-back Laotians.

When you're an alien, you know nothing. And you'll learn to see the world differently. Life is never the same, and it's not like what you think it is. Your rules don't apply. Like a baby, adapt, go with the flow, or you'll suffer.

So, yes. Someday I'll go to China. Not for the great wall, not for the scenic beauty, but for the people. There's always something you can learn from the locals when you travel abroad. One day, my destination would be the moon... Be a complete alien, then watch and learn.

Hello, Blog. How are you?

I know, I know. I've been such a bad blogger. Blame it all on twitter. I've got almost no reply in multiply now. But I know. No excuse. I shall keep my love for blogging no matter what. And multiply is the most comfortable place, as you can stalk the people who read your blog :-p

Anyway... So what's up life?
I remembered that I promised to blog every single day of my Vietnam trip in January, but it only lasted until the 2nd day. Arrgghh... now for this one blame it on me. I'm just lazy. And you know what, I went to Vietnam again! Hell yeah, I went traveling for a month this summer, starting from Kuala Lumpur, and then I flew to Bangkok... From Bangkok I traveled overland -solo and hobo style- to Hanoi. Crossing northen Laos.

It was amazing. A journey of a lifetime. And it's not because of the scenery or landmarks etc (Indonesia is still prettier, trust me) It's just because the things that I experienced there. Not everything is pretty. At some part of my travel I really lived like a refugee. I almost got arrested in Vientiane, I went hitchin-a-ride in Vieng Xai, met a group of American traveling musician, and stayed in a hippie refugee camp owned by a hippie Israeli, etc. See, not everything is pretty.

But nothing is more rewarding than drinking beers with friendly Laotians, sharing Dji Sam Soe with new American friends, and awed by the scenic beauty of the hills in Vieng Xai (literally in the middle of nowhere) on the way to Sam Neua (also in the middle of nowhere) from the bunk of a pick-up truck running 90km/h- with steep scary cliff only a metre away.

Traveling helps me see my life from a different point of view. Realizing that everything, anything, can happen to you everywhere and at any time. And the fact that you're alone, completely alone, and far away from home is another thing. Suddenly you gained a new super power: surviving. Yeah, it's not just a holiday. At some point I even told myself "WHAT ARE YOU GET YOURSELF INTO, THERA???"

But you know what? Ever since, I learned not to take life for granted anymore, including things that you used to hate, like Jakarta and its traffic jam.

Moreover, the trip helped me understand myslef more then ever. I realized what I really want to do in life. I realized how much my life is worth. And I'm thankful, sincerely thankful for every precious second. It's such an amazing life we live i. Make the most of it. See the world. Seize it.

And hell yeah, I'm so goddamn proud of myself. I actually did it!

I'll blog the details! I promise!
Hello, Blog! I'm back!

Viet Nam - Part 1: "Chuy.

Lewat imigrasi tanpa masalah. Gue menunggu buntelan karung yang kita bawa (a.k.a Backpacks) , dan Sisi ke toilet.

Karena gak bisa bahasa Vietnam (kecuali "hello", "thank you", "how much", "oh my god", "mbak!"

Selama perjalanan, pastilah kami liat kiri liat kanan. Hmm, kesan pertama tentang Saigon kurang begitu menggoda. Rasanya sama kaya daerah Kota atau Glodok, feels like home. Di sekitar taman kota ini banyak Vietnamese (or should I say Viet kong??) pacaran dengan cara duduk-duduk di atas motor (again, feels like home...) Lucu deh, motor bejejer jejer ngadep taman, di atasnya cewe cowo peluk-pelukan dan cium-ciuman. Hihi!

Akhirnya ktia nyampe di rumah host. Host kita adalah Adam, Steve, May, and Annie... 4 great people who share one great 6 storey house (a.k.a semacem ruko) Adam itu orang Inggris yang terdampar di Saigon sebagai guru bahasa Inggris dan DJ yg lagi naik daun. Oh, he's so full of himself! but he's really fun!
She reminded me of my girlfriends back home.

ZOROK. Kalo diimpor ke Indonesia pasti gak laku... taruhan deh.

Next episode: Thera dan Sisi menjelajah Saigon.

"Hobo Travellers in Their (1st) Action!!!": Viet Nam January 2010 - part 0

Grrr....

I think it's about time, or else all the memory will biodegrade like wasted shit. For privacy purposes, I'll write in Indonesian - slang Indonesian (karena gue akan banyak ngomongin orang-orang yg nggak ngerti Bahasa Indonesia... ho ho ho)

(malu-maluin...)

Maklum, gue kan sebenernya sama noraknya sama yang lain - cuma pura-pura nggak mao keliatan norak aja... jadilah istilah hobo traveler ini kita temukan.

Kenapa?

Ah iya... tadi lagi ngomongin apa yah? Agustus 2009! Saat AIRASIA tercinta membuka promo ke Ho CHi Minh (a.k.a Saigon) I was thrilled to find the news 'cause I've always wanted to hit Vietnam with my armpit razorblade (what a freaky metaphor), and actually I didn't mind doing the trip alone. However, I didn't wanna make my parents worry too - so I needed a travelmate.

La la la... and the journey begun...

I'm not ready yet, but what the hell...

It is actually a one-night-business trip
But then, as a last-minute decision maker, I decided to make use of the tickets my clients bought me... and put all my long-time stress to rest. I desperately in need for one... since early 2008... I want a vacation.

I have no place to stay...
I have no itinerary...
I have no (enough) cash...
I have no traveling buddies... (at all)
I have no idea what it's going to be like up there in that so-called rainbow island...

...but I extended my flight anyway...

Belitung, here I come!!! :-D

Dalam perjalanan ke Israel, dari Mesir...

Dari gunung Sinai, entah berapa lama perjalanannya, gue lupa, tapi lamaaaa bgt... ada sekitar 5 jam deh kayanya. menyusuri laut merah, lewat kolongnya terusan suez. Sempet berhenti sebentar di sebuah sumur bersejarah yg katanya tempat Musa merubah air tidak layak minum jadi layak minum (manis). Terus bernti lagi di sebuah oasis tempat ratusan pohon kurma yg tertulis di perjanjian lama (tp sekarang pohon kurmanya cm puluhan). Gue sempet metik buah kurmanya yg masih kuning2, terus gue makan langsung (ga dicuci) krn penasaran, hehe lucu juga loh rasanya... walopun bau onta dikit...

Lalu rombongan kami masuk Israel lewat Taba Border.

Climbing Mt. Sinai (Part II of the blog)

the highest peak! At last I'm there!
The beauty is beyond words can tell...

On the top of mt.Sinai, the Moslem, Christian, and Jews share the place together, praying in their own way of beliefs. Separated, but magically united by the atmosphere. I can hear the Ukrainian orthodoxes people singing such a heavenly song in a choir. People talk and pray in their own language, and move in their own religious cultures. It's not just the beauty of Mt.Sinai who captured my heart, it's everything. the harmony. the soul of all the diversity that merge there. At that moment, I know that God doesn't speak in a certain language, a certain faith, or a certain religious culture. God speaks in a divine beauty of the diverse nature, and we're all part of it.

These are all the picture I got. The battery of my camera was low. Please mind me, and I'm not a professional photographer.

Climbing Mt. Sinai in Egypt (Part I)

It's been a long time since I last open the Old Testament. One of the most popular biblical stories in it was how Moses led the Israeli out of slavery in Egypt. On September 11 2007 (yeah, it was exactly the date, 6 years after the 9/11) I flew to Egypt in my pilgrimage tour to the Holy land. I arrived on Sept 12, exhausted of sitting all day and night in the plane, and started the tour right away around the Cairo city. Cairo was very nice, especially the pyramids... it's humongous! However, it is Mt.Sinai who has stolen my heart.

On Sept 13, after another 5 hrs ass-locked-up on the couch, we arrived on Mt.Sinai. It was already 8p.m, so I wasn't really aware of the scenery, it's all dark. The food was terrible, the bed was worse, I haven't had enough rest and I had to wake up 1 a.m in the morning to climb mt.Sinai, the mountain Moses climbed and received the Ten Commandments from God. I didn't expect much, and it was just an optional tour, so I was actually able to skip the late night tour and get some rest. But I thought, I'm in Egypt, I should do everything to the fullest, I must try everything, including climb the 4000m high rocky mountain.

So there I was, woke up in 1am, washed my face and brushed my teeth, covered myself up with thick clothes, drank a lot of hot hot hot coffees, and ready to go.

I arrived at the 1st stop where everything was dark. I can smell the ugly camel poop. The Bedouins (The nomaden tribe from Arab Emirates) was all around speaking the unknown language. I was with Indonesian group yet I feel lost, especially in translation. I traveled with my mom, and such a shame for me to admit that we were on a group tour. Our friends in a tour were mostly the oldies, so most of them think that they couldn't make it to the top of Mt.Sinai, finally it was just the 8 of us, and I as the youngest of all.

We walked around 200m to the camel station (I call it a camel station since there're lots and lots of camels there, lining up like taxis in a hotel's front desk) I've been waiting for around 30minutes until I got my camel. Riding the camel was quite tricky; especially to hop on it, but the "camel guy" helped me. I almost fall at first but I succeed in my 2nd try. My tour leader already warned us that the track to climb the mountain was very small, and we'll be separated from the group since it's impossible for the camel to walk together. So there I was, separated from the group and especially my mom, I was much ahead. Only me, my camel, and the camel guy.

The sky was as dark as the black velvet. About thousands of stars felt very near above me. I can easily spotted the northern star, and I finally noticed the rocky mountains of Sinai. It looks like a big giant genie with lots of wrinkles on his face, very scary yet beautiful. We aren't aloud to use our flashlight since it could give temporary blindness to the camel, so the only lights came from the stars. The left and the right of the track is the rocky hills. Thanks God I can't see it because of the darkness, I know that it would be very scary. I know I could fall. My life depends on the camel.

After riding the camel for 1and a half hour, I arrived at the 2nd stop. I had to park my camel there and continue the journey by foot. It's still a long way to go and I've been warned that the track will be narrower. I waited for the rest of the group (and my mom of course), drank a cup of $1 hot cocoa, chat with another tourist from Colombia. Then I walk.

I noticed that there were some people wearing black robes and funny hat juts like in the old movies. I talked with one of them and he said that they were people from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Some of them were very old, but they had the courage to climb.

Then I walked. In the velvet darkness

I walked.

I slipped a little bit.

But then I walked again.

And I walked. I had walked for about 1 and a half hrs already.

The group stopped to much, they stopped every 20 steps. That's it. I can see the sky getting pinkish and I know soon the sun will rise. I really have to reach the peak before the sun rises, or else I could miss the best part. So I left my group and ran to the top.

The local guide told me that the top was only 5 mnts away. And there I lost my breath. I was dehydrated. I left my bottle of water in the 2nd stop since I don't want to carry anything, I need both of my palm free of holding anything to help myself climb up the mountain freely. The windy chill was getting into my skin and my bone. I felt my heart pumping like a 5000watt speaker in a live rock gig. But the sky was getting more pinkish and pinkish and I don't want to miss a thing, not a bit. So I kept climbing.

And there I was. On the top of mt. Sinai, right before the sunrise…

*to be continued, pics coming up...*
