The Come-Back of the Metaphorical Maestro!
It was 4 years ago, in 2004, when I met 'the great' Ayu Utami at a creative writing workshop. She told us_participants_ that she's now working on her next novel about wall climbers.
About 2 years later, precisely in 2006, English Lit department in UI held a literature appreciation event with anti-violence against women theme. Ayu Utami is one of the keynote speaker. As my friends knew that I was a freakin'fan of Ayu Utami, they told me to be the liason officer for Ayu Utami. I had to pick her up at her house (a great opportunity to peek into her living room, which also her personal library. Never had I seen sooooo many books in one's personal lilbrary, full with rare collection documents!)
On the way to the venue, I asked about her novel in progress. Why so long? I asked, can't wait for more metaphorical sensation of hers. She said that she want to have the best result, not merely catching up with other writers' productivity.
Fair enough, I think. I shall wait for another one or two years for another mind explosions. I bet it's worth it.
And finally, this month I heard a news about her novel: Bilangan Fu. It must be the one she's been working all this time. The one about wall climbers.
So I ordered the novel from the internet. And there it is... The novel I've been waiting for some years... The mystical black cover, the smell of the papers, the weigh of hudreds-of-pages-book on my hand. A new writer's bible.
I've just read the first 60 pages, and this far it's still worth the waiting.
Ayu Utami is still the metaphorical maestro.
